Treasonous Leaders

I again feel the need to quote things from an article. Today's is from The Common Voice, entitled "The Party of Treason."

Article III, section 3, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution relates that "Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

Many of the leaders of our country have been saying things that are, by the above definition, treasonous.

Recently, Senator John Kerry said, "There is no reason... why American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the middle of the night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking... religious customs - whether you like it or not."

Howard Dean, the Chairman of the Democrat National Committee, said that the "idea that we're going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong."

Senator Dick Durbin remarked... after reading... that Guantanamo Bay detainees had been chained to a floor, forced to listen to loud rap music, and endure uncomfortable temperatures in their cells, "If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings."

Representative John Murtha was quoted as saying that "the direction [of the war] has got be changed or it is unwinnable, going on to state that "we cannot previal in this war as it is going today." (John Kerry recently said something along these lines as well)

Senator Ted Kennedy remarked, "shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's torture chambers reopened under new management: U.S. management," "referring to the Abu Ghraib prison story which recounted the humiliation of suspected terrorists by a few rogue American service members."

Abraham Lincoln once wrote that "Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged." That is most certainly what these men are doing.

To even suggest that American soldiers are "terrorizing" innocent people in Iraq, or that the war they are fighting is "unwinnable" amounts to treason, as it does indeed give "aid and comfort" to our enemies, and further endangers the lives of those fighting men and women to whom the Congressmen mentioned above owe their very way of life.

Many say that disagreeing with the President isn't unpatriotic, but
elected officials who go out of their way to demonize, devalue, or degrade U.S. troops during wartime are not merely disagreeing with a particular policy initiative. It's one thing to say that President Bush has mismanaged the war, but it's another thing entirely to refer to the people who are charged with defending our country against the worst ideological plague to beset humanity in my lifetime as the equivalent of Nazis and Stalinists.

Is there any doubt whatsoever that when Representative Murtha called our military personnel "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth" ...that this absurd and fallacious account encouraged terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan to step up their attacks against not only our troops in the field but the civilian populations of those countries as well? If Murtha were truly sincere in his belief that American soldiers are not as well equipped as they should be, or that their morale is in decline, how does publicly humiliating help to rectify the situation?

Saying such exaggerated statements is ridiculous and dangerous. If this man really believes that our troops aren't getting the things they need, or that their morale is low, there are more effective, good things to do. One would be to meet with the President to discuss increasing the war budget in order to better ensure their safety. Another would be to give a speech congratulating each branch for their efforts, in spite of the trials they encounter every day.

There is no honor in defeatist rhetoric, nor is there patriotism in the demoralization of even one American soldier at war. Those who encourage retreat in the name of political expediency are nothing less than parasites festering within the belly of this great nation, deserving of eternal shame at the very least, and, if I had my way, far worse than that.

Freedom of speech and ensuring that everyone has a voice is necessary in a democracy:

"A little rebellion now and then ... is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."
Author: Thomas Jefferson

"Men seldom, or rather never for a length of time and deliberately, rebel against anything that does not deserve rebelling against."
Author: Thomas Carlyle

"It is maintained that a society is free only when dissenting minorities have room to throw their weight around. As a matter of fact, a dissenting minority feels free only when it can impose its will on the majority: what it abominates most is the dissent of the majority.'
Author: Eric Hoffer

"No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots."
Author: Barbara Ehrenreich

To build on Skye's quotes, freedom of speech is what separates our democratic government from a dictatorship. It is not treasonous to disagree with the government's actions. Besides, why is it so upsetting to you to begin that people question the government's actions? Are you afraid people might AGREE with them? Why not answer their questions instead of suggesting that "they should be hanged"?
Perhaps it is "damaging morale" because many citizens are unhappy with our government's actions?

If you personally felt that the government was taking inappropriate actions - which you perhaps might have felt during the Clinton administration - wouldn't you want to use your constitutionally-given right to freedom of speech?

Yes, you would and you SHOULD. It is not different when liberals do it - it just isn't what you want to hear. It is not America-hating to question one's government. If anything, true patriots will always attempt to improve upon their country, regardless of which party is in power, which cannot be achieved without dissent.
