Contradictions regarding melting
This Scientific American blurb, "Bleak forecast: Arctic sea ice just misses record melt" has a very misleading title, given that both the text of the blurb and data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center say that ice coverage has actually increased since last year. Sometimes I can't quite figure out how the media translates bad news from good news. The SciAm blurb just focuses on how bad the melting was, but didn't mention that it seems to be turning around.
Update (9/20.08):
Another piece about the bad state of arctic ice:
"Arctic Ice in 'Death Spiral'" - National Geographic
I'm not sure what good it does to make such a big deal out of the melt state for the season for two reasons: ice coverage has increased since last year, and it will increase again this winter. It will be interesting to see the overall state of the ice over the next few years/decades.
